Passeig Ecològic de Benissa: A coastal walk between pine trees and hidden coves
Some walks you do for the exercise and others you do for the views. The Passeig Ecològic de Benissa gives you both, without asking much of your legs.
Tucked between Calpe and Moraira, this coastal path follows Benissa’s rugged shoreline past cliffs, small coves and pine trees that grow almost to the water’s edge. I walked it recently on a Wednesday in September and it’s now one of my favourite easy walks on the northern Costa Blanca.
Quick facts
- Location: Benissa coast, Alicante (between Calpe and Moraira)
- Starting point: Tourist Info Benissa Platja, Avinguda de la Marina
- Distance: roughly 2.75 km for the official route; the full coastal path is often described as about 4 km
- Time: 1.5 to 2 hours at a relaxed pace, with photo stops
- Difficulty: easy, with some gentle ups and downs (around 100 m of elevation gain)
- Best for: couples, families, casual walkers, photographers
- Parking: free parking is available near the start
Where to start
The official starting point is the Tourist Info office at Benissa Platja on Avinguda de la Marina, but you can join the path at several points along the coast. The path is split into a northern and a southern stretch, so you can choose a shorter walk or combine both.
If you want a linear walk rather than there-and-back, start at Cala Bassetes and finish at the other end of the route.
What you’ll see along the way
Hidden coves. The path passes several small coves, including Cala Bassetes, Cala de la Fustera, Cala Pinets and Cala Baladrar. All have their own charm and beautiful views.
Cliffs and Mediterranean vegetation. The route has an old quarry of the local sandstone and a botanical area with typical coastal plants. In spring the scent of wild thyme and other herbs is wonderful. When I was there I was amazed by the smell of the big pine trees.
Picnic and rest areas. Inland, the Fanadix Green Zone has a picnic area and along the coast there are benches where you can simply sit and look at the sea. Near the end you’ll reach the Parc Biosaludable with outdoor fitness equipment and more views.
Views of the Peñón de Ifach. On the southern stretch you can see the iconic rock of Calpe on the horizon. It’s a lovely backdrop for photos.
My experience
What impressed me most was how well maintained the path is. It’s clearly marked and easy to follow, so you never have to worry about getting lost. After a hot summer and a bit less exercise than usual, I still managed the walk comfortably, which makes it a great choice if you’re not a seasoned hiker.
It’s also a good walk to do with a dog, as long as you keep them on a lead. I’d skip it with a dog in summer, though, as the heat and the lack of shade in places can be too much for them.
The real highlight for me was the viewpoints. There are plenty of them and each one offers a different perspective on the coastline, from rocky cliffs to quiet coves and open sea. It’s one of my favorite routes on the Costa Blanca.
Practical tips
- Wear proper shoes. The path is mostly easy, but there are unpaved and slightly uneven sections.
- Bring water. There is little shade in places, especially in summer.
- Go early or late in summer. Midday heat on the coast can be intense. Spring and autumn are ideal.
- Pack swimwear. Several coves invite a swim on warm days.
- Take your camera. Early morning and golden hour are magical here.
- Check conditions. Signage and access can change, so look at the official Benissa tourism information before you go.
Is it worth it?
Absolutely. It’s an easy, scenic walk that suits almost everyone and you can make it as short or as long as you like. If you’re staying in Denia, Calpe, Moraira or Benissa, it’s a perfect half-day activity, especially combined with lunch afterwards in Benissa Costa.
